ServerPoint: dedicated server price increase
Dedicated server price increaseAs you may be aware, Thailand is experiencing a severe flood disaster that is causing problems, not only to the people of Thailand, but also to manufacturing and supply around the world.
How does this affect us? Well simply, Thailand is a major manufacturer of hard drives and hard drive parts, which is now severely affecting drive supplies. In fact, over the last few weeks, hard drives have more than doubled in price and are also in very short supply.
Our need for new hard drives is in the few hundreds per month. With major data centers, such as Google and other major companies, securing most of the remaining stock of "enterprise" grade drives, we expect prices to continue rising well into 2012.
Because of this, as of November 15, all prices for new dedicated server orders will be going up an average of $20-$50/month. If you are plannning on ordering a new dedicated server, we suggest you do it soon as we still have a good amount of servers in inventory with drives that came from previous purchases. We estimate however this stock will run out in two to three weeks. Prices for new web hosting and cloud VPS hosting orders will not be affected in the near future.
You may find out more by Googling "hard drive shortage", or by visiting http://hothardware.com/News/Brace-Yourself-The-Great-Hard-Drive-Shortage-of-2011-is-Coming/.
We will of course always find new ways to serve our customers, whether we have hard drives or not. We are currently trying Intel's latest generation of SSD disks and will be offering them soon as an alternative.
Our best wishes go out to the people of Thailand during these tough times.
